The name of Penang and Pulau Pinang originate from the betel Areca nut palm tree called "Pinang" in Malay. It is found in the Penang State flag. In the George Town Bishop Street round about, next to Penang George Town Clock Tower, you can find a big 'Areca Nut' metal Art works. This is the symbol of Penang!

Penang George Town has obtained his World Heritage status since 2008. Tourist can experience the famous world heritage building and culture. Taking a trishaw ride starts with the Beach Road where Fort Cornwallis towards Chew Jetty.

Then walking back to Chulia Road and going towards Armenian Road would be interesting where you explore more attracted heritage building where there are Yap Kongsi and Khoo Kongsi temples, Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple, Dr Sun Yat Sen museum, Islamic museum etc. Of course the most interesting places would be the oldest temple along the Kapitan Masjid road namely 'Kuan Yin Teng'.

Located a mere 9.9 miles/ 16 km south of George Town, the airport serves a large region and provides extensive links with major cities across South East Asia and beyond. Penang George Town obtained his World Heritage status in 2008, who over the years have come to adore the “Pearl of the Orient” and many return as often as they can. Malaysian people are friendly and charming and Penang, with its wonderful stalls selling delicious street food, its beautiful architecture and fascinating culture is attracting a large number of tourists every year.

Passengers arriving at the airport have a choice of public transport available. There are taxis, of course, but there are also 3 bus routes taking visitors from Penang International Airport into the capital city. The Rapid Penang service has its own bus counter on the ground floor level of the arrivals hall and a ticket for bus line U401 costs around 2 – 3 Ringgit. The bus will stop at a number of halts until it gets to Komtar, from where a 5 to 10 minute walk will take visitors to hotels like the Tune Hotel Penang. Due to the many stops, this service can be a lot slower than the name “Rapid” might suggest!

A the taxi counter in the arrivals hall, passengers can ask for assistance. Once the helpful staff know, which hotel a visitor is heading for, they will issue a voucher to the visitor, for which the visitor pays and the tourist then takes the paid voucher to the taxi stand. The taxi driver issues a counterfoil to confirm that the transaction has been concluded, when he/she delivers the passenger safely to their destination. This system is designed to reassure foreign travellers, who might be worried that due to language difficulties they might not negotiate the correct fare.

Getting to Penang from Butterworth

The oldest transportation to George Town Penang Island is by ferry transfer from Butterworth Jetty. There is bus terminal and also train station at Butterworth. You just need to walk to the ferry terminal within 100m away. You pay around one time RM1.20 for adult per trip. Back from George Town is free of charge. While you are boarding to the ferry, you can see the Penang George Town KOMTAR tower from far. The ferry will take approximately 15-20 minutes to reach George Town ferry terminal. Once you get down from ferry, you can either take RAPID bus service or taxi to go to George Town city center.

Ferry service is the oldest mode of transport between the mainland and Penang Island. Since Penang Bridge was completed in year 1985, most of the motorists are using the Penang Bridge. The first exit is Sungai Dua and use Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah to go to George Town. Now the distance to George Town was shorten by traveling along Tun Dr Lim Chong Ewe Expressway was built in Nov 2010.. It takes approximately 15 minutes to reach KOMTAR George Town after exit from Penang Bridge.

Penang second Bridge

The Penang Second Bridgei s a new bridge under construction in Penang, Malaysia. It will connect Batu Kawan on the mainland Seberang Perai and Batu Maung on Penang Island.

It will be the second bridge to link the island to the mainland after Penang Bridge. The total length of the RM 3 billion bridge is 24 km (15 mi) and will become the longest bridge in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. China Harbour Engineering Co Ltd (CHEC) expected to start work on the second Penang bridge in November 2008 for completion in 2013.

The first bridge linked straight into Gelugor to Seberang with 13.5km Penang Bridge, which opened to traffic in September 1985, brought welcome relief as it enabled traffic from the island to mainland.

But over the years, traffic has built up again, especially during to and back office hours. Also during the festival seasons when people from outstation coming back to Penang for holidays. The 1st Penang Bridge also has been expanded one more lane for car.

With the development of the second Penang Bridge, it will create more business opportunity and constructions and the Batu Kawan, Batu Maung throughout the coastal area on the south.

Chap Goh Meh Festival in Penang

Chap Goh Meh in Hokkien known as festival for the fifteenth in the Chinese Lunar New Year. It marks the first full moon of the Lunar New Year and the Chinese community celebrates this happy auspicious occasion with various activities.

The throwing of oranges into the sea is an important part of Penang ’s Chap Goh Meh cultural heritage. Traditionally, unmarried women would toss oranges into the sea. While doing so, hopeful unmarried men would try their luck at catching these oranges in order to meet their future spouse. Many decades back, the Chap Goh Meh Celebration is the only event where unmarried Nyonya women could be seen dressed in their kebaya nyonya either to throw oranges or to meet their sweethearts. But they were of course, accompanied by a family member.

The throwing of oranges into the sea event will be held at the Esplanade, Penang. Beside that, there are Dondang Sayang performers, lion dance and chingay performance.

Thai Buddhist Temple in Penang

1. Wat Chaiya Mangalaram

Wat Chaiya Mangalaram was built as a Buddhist temple on the 30th May 1845. According to the record available, the idea of granting the land as a permanent endowment for religious benefit of Thailand was first mooted by the governor, Mr. W.I. Butterworth. A formal grant was made by the East India Company on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Victoria to representative of the community. Since then, the land has remained in trust to this present day.

The main attraction of Wat Chaiya Mangalaram is the reclining Buddha statue (Luang Phor Chiya Mangol), which was built during 25th century of the Buddhist Era (1957). With length of 108 ft and 32 ft in height makes it the largest in Malaysia and third largest in the world. Skilled sculptor were engaged from Thailand to design the decorative and artistic value of the monument, including drawings of the life story Lord Buddha. There are about 30,000 Buddha image inside the hall. Also an iconography of ancient Buddha and Bodhisatta images of various type from Cambodia, Ceylon, Vietnam, China, Japan, Loas and Thailand are being exhibited in the hall.

To further enhance the unique beauty of the temple, the committee decided to erect a 40ft tall pagoda adjacent to the reclining Buddha building.

Years later, more buildings came up with the donation of kindhearted devotees. Today, Wat Chaiya Mangalarm is one of the most famous tourist spots in Penang.

Wat Buppharam is a Thai Buddhist temple located at Jalan Perak in Penang. The name Wat Buppharam means "flower temple", and is one of the common names for temples in Thailand. Among the locals in Penang, the Wat Buppharam here is often called Temple of the Lifting Buddha, on account of the century-old Buddha image in the temple. It was founded in 1942 by Phothan Srikheaw, a Thai Buddhist monk, who acted as the first abbot of the wat. Wat Buppharam is busiest during the Loy Krathong Festival. It is where the procession starts, with devotees bearing the colorful "krathong" or floral offerings, making their way from the temple at Jalan Perak, through Jalan Burma, Lorong Burma, passing Wat Chaiyamangkalaram and Dhammikarama, to Persiaran Gurney, where they are placed in the sea.

Wat Buppharam is one of the two temples often involved in the staging of Thai festivals such as Loy Krathong and Songkhran.

THE FOOD MALL

Phase 1 of Penang Times Square is well on its way to reposition itself as a Food Mall. Penang Traffic

More and more traffic jam can be seen especially before and after office hours in Penang Island and Penang Bridge. You can see the car moving slow, bumper to bumper and is really testing the Penangites driving patience. In the festival seasons, the traffic flow into Penang Island is heavier than usual. Most of the town area packed with the cars. Due to lack of sufficient public transport system like LRT, the Penangites are mainly travel from one place to another by own vehicle. That is why the number of vehicles either cars or motorbikes are getting more in Penang now.

The traffic jam can be seen most of the time at the junction to Penang Bridge towards Butterworth and also the 'tunnel' to George Town for those cars from Butterworth. The bridge traffic hopefully can be release when the second Penang Bridge is completed. Those workers who work in Bayan Lepas and Seberang Jaya Industrial Estates are encouraged to use B.E.S.T (Bridge Express Shutter Transit) as part of the Penang State to reduce the vehicle flow into Penang Bridge as well as to reduce some of the burden in petrol and toll fees.

Time that wasted on the road especially caught in jammed are probably the non-productive time for the Penangites. How this can be resolved? Penangites are advisable to check on the Penang Bridge Traffic Check on the website before departure if they want to cross the bridge. Hope all Penangites will work together to overcome this Penang Traffic issues. Hope Penangites able to enjoy the stress free and healthy lifestyle soon!

Penang Sakura blossom

Around Feb to Mar each year, the 'Sakura' trees in Penang will blossom. You can see the flowers blossom and dropping on the streets along the road in Bayan Baru. Called the Tabebuia Rosea in scientific terms, these flowers sprout in colours of white, pink, and pastel purple leaving trails of fluffiness on the ground and making it the most eye-catching Penang scenery of the month. Penangites need not to go to Japan to see the Japan Sakura, the 'Sakura' Penang blossom as beautiful and magnificent that you seen in Japan. A good opportunity for Penang Municipal Council to plant more 'Sakura' trees in Penang Island and Seberang Prai as part of promoting Penang Tourism.

Also known as Pink Tecoma or Rosy Trumpet tree, this species is native in Central and South America at thetropical belt. Commonly found growing from sealevel to 1,200 m (3,937 ft), in temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C on average, with annual rainfall above 500 mm, and on soils with very variable pH (Wikipedia ~ Tabebuia Rosea).

Penang Free Ride Service (B.E.S.T)

One of the best solution to reduce traffic on the Penang Bridge is to take public transport or car poll system. Now Penang Government implemented the B.E.S.T (Bridge Express Shuttle Transit) system for the workers in the F.I.Z (Free Industrial Zone) between Bayan Lepas and Seberang Prai. The workers can save the petrol or toll fees up to RM250. They just needed to pay for the parking fees at the B.E.S.T (Park and Ride) points.
A bus shelter was being built at the Sunway Carnival Mall in Seberang Jaya which would be the initial pick-up and drop off point, while 50 to 60 stops would be put up in front of various factories in Bayan Lepas.

Penang Government hopes this B.E.S.T program will release some of the burden facing by the lower income group due to the fuel price increased tremendously within a short period.

（檳城20日訊）馬來西亞理科大學“廣告浪潮（ADWAVE）”活動捲土重來，今年度的ADWAVE主題以國內旅游業為主，命名為“七彩繽紛的魅力”，希望藉此讓大眾更深刻體會大馬旅游景點的獨有風情。

本年度的ADWAVE除了啟發大學生的創意，也特別提供他們一個贏取高達8000令吉巨額獎品的機會！

ADWAVE主辦單位，即理科大學傳播學院公關系第三年生指出，ADWAVE是Award Winning Advertisement Exhibition的縮稱。這項活動主要是為了讓大學生自我提升市場營銷技巧，亦提供他們在踏入社會之前一個實習的平台。

此外，主辦單位也通過主旨為“如何有效率通過流動性網際網絡媒介推廣馬來西亞國內旅游業”的Mar.Com2來舉辦啟發大學生創意的比賽，提供大學生制作短片及創意廣告來發揚國內旅游業的機會。

Penang Is The No.1 State For Total Capital Investments In 2010 Attracting RM 12,238 Million

Penang Is The No.1 State For Total Capital Investments In 2010 Attracting RM 12,238 Million, Up Nearly 5 Times As Compared To RM 2,165 Million In 2009 And Comprising 26% Of Malaysia’s Total Investments Of RM47,177 Million For 2010.

According to Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA), Penang is the No.1 state for total capital investments in manufacturing projects in 2010 attracting RM 12,238 million, up nearly 5 times as compared to RM 2,165 million in 2009. This is the first time in history that Penang has topped the list of investments amongst all states and is the highest investment received ever. This success is due to the hard work by the 1.6 million Penangites together with state government leaders and agencies as well as federal government agencies from MIDA and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Penang’s investments were derived from new investments of RM 2,846 million and expansion by existing investors of RM 9,392 million. Clearly these figures only captured those industries that sought incentives from MIDA and not the new or expansion investments that did not require grants from the federal government.

The significance of this historic achievement is highlighted by Penang contribution of RM 12,238 million to Malaysia investment constituting 26% of Malaysia’s total investments of RM 47,177 million of 2010. Yesterday Minister of international trade and industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed announced a 45% increase in Malaysia 2010 investment performance from RM 32,637 million in 2009 to RM 47,177 million in 2010. Penang moved up from No. 4 in 2009 to Nol 1 in 2010, increasing by 465% from RM 2,165 million in 2009 to RM 12,238 million in 2010.

The 465% increase in investments in Penang reflects confidence in the energy, expertise and entrepreneurship of our human talent. Further this is an affirmation of the state government’s strategy of promoting Penang as a location of choice based on 7 critical success factors(CSF) of growth:-

1. Ready availability of skilled human talent;

2. Effective and efficient supply chain management;

3. Competent and reliable logistics and communications hub

4. Strong Intellectual Property protection;

5. Good governance and effective leadership;

6. Building creativity and innovation in science and technology; and

7. Livable and intelligent city.

Penang believes that CAT governance of competency accountability and transparency has also built confidence that a government with integrity can make things happen and both execute and deliver. Penang was not only the best performer in managing state finances in Malaysia according to the Auditor-General Report for 2009 but also received accolades for anti-corruption from Transparency International.

As the newly-crowned champion amongst all states in attracting investments, the Penang state government wishes to congratulate the people of Penang. With the best financial performance, the best state in clean governance, the best green practices and now the top performer in investments, Penangites can now proudly say “Penang Leads!”.

Lion dance (simplified Chinese: 舞狮; traditional Chinese: 舞獅; pinyin: wǔshī) is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture, in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume. The lion dance is often mistaken as dragon dance. An easy way to tell the difference is that a lion is operated by two people, while a dragon needs many people. Also, in a lion dance, the performers' faces are covered, since they are inside the lion. In a dragon dance, the performers can be seen since the dragon is held upon poles. Basic lion dance fundamental movements can be found in most Chinese martial arts. Lion dance will be performed for Chinese festivals and celebrations such as marriage ceremony, welcoming guest, opening ceremony, during 1st day of Chinese New Year etc. The Chinese believe lion dance can bring luck, prosperous and joy.

Penang State Government is organizing Chinese New Year Heritage Celebration at Chulia Street, Armenian Street, Soo Hong Lane, Ah Quee Street & Acheh Street on 12th Feb 2011. It will be various performance included lion dance, cultural dance, art and stage performance.

Tow Boo Kong Temple 斗母宫 is located near to the north traffic junction of Lebuhraya Lingkaran Luar Butterworth and Jalan Raja Uda. Tow Boo Kong Temple 斗母宫 is a Toaist temple in Butterworth with an impressive building architectural design, which has intricate carvings and sculptures done by 50 craftmen from China.

The construction of the temple began in 1996 and was officially completed on the 26th of April 2000 at a cost of 7 Million.

Tow Boo Kong Temple 斗母宫 comprises of three sections which includes the Front Prayer Hall, the Scared Prayer Room and the Dou Mu Prayer Hall. At the basement of the temple, there is a Conference Room and right behind the Sacred Room is the Inner Courtyard.

Every year, the Tow Boo Kong Temple 斗母宫 held for nine days the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, from the first day to the ninth day of the 9th lunar month. This is when the spirits of the Nine Emperor Gods which are believed to dwell in the starts, descend to earth and possess the spirits mediums, putting them in a trance. During the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, many devotees will go on a vegetarian diet. Stalls are set up to sell vegetarian food, vegetarian cake and goodies. An opera show will also be performed as a mark of respect to the Gods.

Penang implements No Plastic Bag everyday

From Jan 1 this year, plastic bags will be banned in the Malaysian state of Penang.

The ban will apply to all supermarkets, hypermarts, department stores, fast food chain stores and nasi kandar outlets, as well as convenience stores including petrol kiosks and chain stores, The Star newspaper reported.

The move is an extension of the current "No Plastic Bag Day" observed by shopping malls and hypermarts in the state three days a week. Shoppers who did not bring their own reusable bags are charged 20 sen ($0.08) for each plastic bag.

The ban, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in his Budget speech, will reduce the state's carbon footprint. Chief Minister said that it is all right for the older generation to be angry with the state government for not providing them with plastic bags so long as the future generation get to enjoy a better environment.

Tropical Fruit Farm is situated about 800ft above sea level on the hilly terrain of Teluk Bahang in Penang is an ideal location for cultivating many types of tropical and sub-tropical fruit trees. The orchard covers 25 acres and it was developed back in 1993 with a few objectives in mind. First of all, to conserve the rare and exotic fruit trees. Secondly, to educate and promote to the locals as well as foreigners of the gift that our land is blessed with. Lastly, to play a positive role towards agriculture and eco / agro tourism amid the intensive development in our state’s rural areas.

Over the years, the orchard has acquired many rare and exotic fruit trees from the region as well as from far-flung corners of the globe such as Central and South America, Central Africa, India, the Middle East, the Caribbean, the Pacific Islands etc. Today the orchard boasts of a collection of over 250 different species and the list is still growing.

The farm endeavours to use only organic fertilisers. Some of which are processed in the farm using fruit waste collected from around the farm. Chemicals are only used when absolutely necessary. In the farm, our aim is to work towards a cleaner environment for the future.

Apart from viewing the fruits of course there would be sampling of the variety of flavours that is unique to each individual fruit. The orchard also prepares light snacks, juices and a hefty BBQ buffet spread on the weekends and public holidays.

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb). The festival celebrates the birth of Murugan,the youngest son of Shiva and his wife Parvati.

During Thaipusam in Penang, devotees go through a physical endurance of being skewered and pierced on the back and front of their bodies by hooks with miniature urns as an act of penance. Majority of the devotees who go through this act are Indians but Chinese, Sikh and other visitors can also be seen taking part in this act of faith which leaves many devotees and observers alike, spiritually transformed.

Millions of old coconuts smashing and breaking will be taken placed as a form of thanksgiving by Hindu devotees and foreign tourists as the Chariot of Lord Murugan in the streets of Penang.

A pilgrimage procession takes place to bring the statue of Lord Muruga, who represents virtue, youth and power, on a silver chariot led by more then 60 Kavadis adorned with peacock feathers from Little India to the Nattukottai Chettiar Temple atop the hill of Waterfall Road.

Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) is an indoor sports area in Bayan Baru, Penang. Completed in the year 2000, the Main Arena (Arena Utama), the Aquatic Centre (Pusat Akuatik), and a multi-storey car park complex. There is also additional parking space at the basement of the main arena.

It is the largest indoor stadium in northern Malaysia. It can be fully air conditioned and has a capacity of 10,000 spectators. The arena is often the venue for exhibitions and sports tournaments. Annual dinners and banquets have also been held in there where can hold 3000 seated guests or 140 exhibition booths. Another area available in PISA is concourse where normally the exhibitions took placed before go into the main stadium. Raja Muda Selangor Regatta 2010 - Penang

The Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta is a challenging offshore sailing race organised every year by the Royal Selangor Yacht Club in association with the RORC.

The event consists of three overnight passage races, some 240 miles in total, plus two days of harbour racing in Penang and Langkawi. With regatta dinners almost every night, a trishaw race and lots of opportunities to socialise, onshore activities can be just as demanding as the sailing.

It attracts a large variety of yachts, with over 60 participating in last year's 20th edition, from IRC1 racers to slow classic cruisers dating back nearly 100 years, all of whom had to battle through good winds and rough seas during the 9 day mix of races past tropical islands

Sails will return to Penang waters in force on 23rd November, when the Raja Muda fleet completes its race from Pangkor and berths at the Tanjung City Marina.

Over 50 yachts and 400 sailors will converge on George Town after some light hearted trishaw races at the marina, then head out to Pulau Tikus on Wednesday 24th November for a further series of races.
That evening they will celebrate at the historic Khoo Kongsi Clan House, with a cultural show (courtesy of Penang Global Tourism) and dinner.

Fort Cornwallis - named after the Governor-General in Bengal, Charles Cornwallis – is one of the most interesting historical landmarks in George Town, located close to the Esplanade, next to the Victoria Memorial Clock.

Fort Cornwallis is situated at the spot where Captain Francis Light was supposed to have landed in 1786. Originally a wooden structure, the fort was rebuilt between 1808 and 1810 with convict labour. It was named after Charles Marquis Cornwallis, a distinguished Governor General of India, and designed as a defense against the French, Kedah, and pirates (at this time Anglo-French rivalry was at a peak).

Sir Francis Light would have never thought that the fort he built more than two centuries ago are still intake and filled with the everlasting rich history of Penang.

Loi Krathong (or Loy Krathong, Thai: ลอยกระทง) is a festival celebrated annually throughout Thailand, certain parts of Laos and Malaysia. Penang is celebrated on the full moon of the 12th Lunar month in which devotees pray to the Water Goddess as well as repent for what they have done.

Loi Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November. "Loi" means "to float" and a "Krathong" is a raft, about a hand span in diameter, traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk. A raft has been developed to be made of bread or sometimes made of styrofoam.

The reason for using bread is to protect the environment,since having many rafts in the river can create a huge water pollution problem. Bread will eventually become food for fish and other animals in the river. Even though banana leaves are biodegradable, it takes longer to be degraded than a bread. Therefore, bread is the most environmental friendly choice to make a raft whereas foam is not recommended at all. A raft is decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks etc..

A well-balanced vegetarian diet naturally contains all proteins and amino acids necessary for good health.

Animal protein contains high amounts of uric acid, which put great strain on our kidneys and subsequently our livers. Also meat in modern times contains large quantities of hormones, pesticides and antibiotics that wreak even more havoc on our systems. In fact, antibiotic use in animal farming has been implicated in recent bacterial resistance to these drugs, creating new breeds of super-bacteria thus endangering all our lives.

Most people become vegetarians for reasons of health or animal welfare. However there is another equally important reason to curtail meat eating, and that is the health of our planet. Vegetarianism, or even just cutting back on the amount of meat and fish one consumes, is a way to help the earth fight back - a way to protect ourselves, the animals and the environment and replenish the dwindling food resources on our planet.

The Snake Temple (simplified Chinese: 蛇庙; pinyin: Shé Miào) is situated in Sungai Kluang, Bayan Lepas, Penang, Malaysia and is perhaps the only temple of its kind in the world.

The temple is dedicated to a deity called Cheng Swee Chor Soo. Cheng Swee Chor Soo is known by the Hokkien as Chor Soo Kong and by the Cantonese as Chou-See Yeah. Both names basically mean the same: "The much honoured Chor-Soo". The temple is one of the oldest in the world and attract many devotees world wide, especially from Taiwan and Singapore.

When you walk into the temple, you can probably see some snakes (green in color) laying on the tree's pot or the bamboo trees. The visitors are advised not to touch the snakes for safety precaution.

The Kek Lok Si Temple (simplified Chinese: 极乐寺; traditional Chinese: 極樂寺; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Ki̍k-lo̍k-sī; Penang Hokkien for "Temple of Supreme Bliss" or "Temple of Sukhavati") is a Buddhist temple situated in Air Itam in Penang and is one of the best known temples on the island. It is the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia.

Mahayana Buddhism and traditional Chinese rituals blend into a harmonious whole, both in the temple architecture and artwork as well as in the daily activities of worshippers.

The construction of the temple began in 1893 and was inspired by the chief monk of the Goddess of Mercy Temple at Pitt Street. With the support of the consular representative of China in Penang, the project received the sanction of the Manchu Emperor Guangxu, who bestowed a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras.

Kek Lok Si Temple will have lighting up ceremony during the Chinese New Year season. The most magnificent night view and become one of the most visited tourist place in Penang.
